How Blower Door Assisted Air Sealing Helps Find Leaks

Using a blower door--a device that sucks the air out of your house to simulate an especially windy day--is the best way to identify where your house leaks. For many of us, a thousand little pin pricks may add up to a hole in your house the size of a window left open 24 hours a day, 365 says per year.

By using a blower door in coordination with air sealing, we can identify the biggest leaks and get them sealed.

This video from Green Building Advisor shows how it's done.

Apperson Energy Management performs a blower door test as part of our comprehensive energy audit.  We also perform the test after air sealing and insulation work is completed to determine just how tight the building shell has become.  We find that air sealing can be one of the most cost effective energy upgrades you can perform as the investment is minimal compared to some upgrades.  Our usual air sealing includes sealing in the attic at the top plate (where accesible), electrical and plumbing penetrations under kitchen and bathroom sinks, and weather stripping any doors showing light when closed and locked.

Blower door testing is also required in order to participate in the PG&E rebate program.
